Even something as simple as making the master of the way S1 + random instead of W1 + random would probably be enough. They need something to help their recruit anywhere mage situation. My thoughts on that in no specific order: Some minor tweaks would get the job done. I feel like it's a nation that's close to being good but isn't quite there. Minor buffs on decent-to-good troops is plenty enough for the AI but probably starts to struggle once you're fighting someone fielding significant numbers of mages of their own. Lately I've been trying Ur and Uruk for that aggressive pretender style and will probably settle on one of them.ĭon't get me wrong I'm not saying they're bad, they're just very heavily dependent on their cap only mages for any kind of power. swans LOL) but don't play them nearly enough as I'd like. I also like MA C'tis (Empoisoner slings and disease dominion as well as being a fan of lizardfolk) and Ys (glamoured amphibious pony-women and. General go-to nations when I don't know which nation to play and don't want to go random. Them being the first nation in each of the eras in terms on Nation ID# as well as them getting good dev support also makes them a good measuring stick when comparing nations. Really.Īrcoscephale: With their scrying dominion and easy access to healers, I feel Arcoscephale regardless of era is a good beginner nation. What's not to like? Any tangential links to Berytos is purely coincidental. The island start takes a while to get used to but at least when it comes to sailing, the Colossi finally get onboard ( heh).Įrytheia: The mermen finally get their metaphorical (and literal) day in the sun! Also, underwater crossbows and incest. Island start and dark vessels are fun and interesting. Still versatile despite the slight shift in theme. Phaeacia: As the successor/remnant of Berytos, I had to give them a go. But priest-spies (Ear of the Lord) and cool spider riders kinda make up for it. Naked dudes and plate armor dudes with nothing in between. MA Machaka: Yeah, they suck hard but that doesn't mean they're not fun to play. It's oddly short and generic, almost like Illwinter put it as a placeholder and forgot to update it. Maybe it's because the nation feels a bit bare-bones and unfinished? Seriously, go read the nation description in the unit overview. The insane range of available pretenders is a nice bonus, especially when you just want to mess around.ĮA T'ien Ch'i: Despite having a similar toolbox like Berytos, took me a lot longer to warm up to them. It has a wide set of tools at its disposal (archers, well equipped infantry, elephants, sailing, blood, broad yet still strong magic access, etc.) but you can't lean on a single aspect too hard (sailing has a pitiful size 2 limit and does not accommodate all recruitables unlike Fomoria and Vanheim, blood mages are expensive, etc.). But since my favourite nation is Berytos, I end up playing EA more often than the others.īerytos: The first nation that really "clicked" for me. Or that while crossbows are rare in EA they don't matter as much as they do in MA and LA. I do enjoy the differences of eras though the scarcity of gems in LA is strongly felt compared to playing with the abundance of EA. Do you prefer a particular era? Perhaps certain types of nations (fun theme/flavour, good access to a particular magic path, non-humans, strong ranged units, amphibious, etc.)?įor me, I don't have a particular preference for era. I'm curious how broad the range of nations and eras people enjoy playing.
